Worked Example Screencast

For this project I decided to explain how the process of referring a student to the Intervention Team at our school. Originally I timed the presentation to allow 2-3 minutes for the discussion and questions. Waiting for the presentation to continue was a bit annoying, so I cut out the extra time and decided pausing the video was a better solution. I am not an artist, my stick figures leave a lot to be desired and usually require a pretty good imagination to figure them out, so I used clip art. Normally I would use wikimedia commons or some other copyright friendly source, However, I since I am using this presentation for school and want teachers to start actually using multimedia, I didn’t want to scare them off thinking they would have to search out images. Yes, I know quality photos and graphics are better but I think these illustrations worked.

Throughout this presentation I applied the various principles of multimedia design we learned about.

  • Multimedia Principle: I used a blend of words and graphics. All slides have narration, the slides with text include narrated directions.
  • Modality Principle: I used narration to explain the graphics. For the questions I allowed time for the participants to process the text.
  • Redundancy Principle: There is no duplication of narration with on-screen text, explanation of what to do with the text only. Each image has an audio explanation.
  • Coherence Principle: This is a streamlined worked example. I did not add anecdotal content or a musical background. It is just straight to the point.
  • Personalization Principle: For this project I deliberately utilized a conversational approach. If the viewers wanted the formal approach, there is a 30 page document they can read on the topic. If they did read and understand it, I would not of needed to create this project. I did not use a on-screen coach, what I did include were opportunities for sharing in a group setting. Also, I was not a visible author in this project, it didn’t seem appropriate for this application.
  • Segmenting and Pretraining Principles: The worked example is broken up with opportunities for participants to share and reflect. I did not include any pretraining as all of the teachers were given an overview by our solutions coach and this process does not have vocabulary that is unfamiliar to the teachers or parents.
